Professor Brian Foster

Prof. Brian Foster, Guest Lecturer at the Emilio Segre Distinguished Lectures in Physics Endowed by Raymond and Beverly Sackler for the academic year 2015/2016 is a Donald H. Perkins Professor of Experimental Physics in the University of Oxford and an Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the University of Hamburg. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics.

 

Prof. Foster is a leading scientist at the National Research Center in Germany (DESY), where he led the ZEUS collaboration of 450 physicists who run a large particle detector at the electron-proton collide. He had also served as Global Design Effort European Regional Director at the LCC (Linear Collider Collaboration) and as Chairman of the European Committee for Future Accelerators. He had also chaired the Physics Panel of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

 

Prof. Foster has been awarded many important prizes including the Humboldt Research Award in 1998 and the Max Born Prize in 2003.

 

Prof. Foster’s research topics include new methods of acceleration and deep inelastic. He is committed to public outreach and gives many public lectures every year.
