Professor Klara Landau

 

Prof. Klara Landau, M.D., Guest Lecturer at the Saul J. Farber Distinguished Lectures in Medicine Endowed by the Sackler foundation for the academic year 2022/2023, is Professor Emerita of Ophthalmology at the University of Zurich and delegate of the Medical Education and Equal Opportunity program at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland.

 

Prof. Landau graduated from the Medical School of the University of Zurich, Switzerland (1972-1978). Following her medical studies, she completed a residency in Anesthesiology, Forensic Medicine, Neurosurgery, and Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), Zurich, Switzerland (1979-1982) and a residency in Ophthalmology at Kaplan Hospital, Rehovot, Israel (1983-1988). She followed a one-year clinical fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology at UC San Francisco, California, USA. She then served as an assistant clinical professor in the School of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley, California, USA (1990-1991). In 1991, she was appointed head of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology at USZ (1991-2002). At the USZ, she was then appointed Chair of the Ophthalmology Department and Professor of Ophthalmology (2002-2018), until her retirement in 2018. Since 2018, she serves as part-time medical education and equal opportunity delegate at USZ. 

 

Prof. Landau is a senior fellow of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and a fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology. She is the past president of the Swiss Ophthalmological Society and the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. Today, she is the president of the Swiss chapter of “Light for the World”, an NGO promoting eye health and the inclusion of disabled persons in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

 

Prof. Landau academic career has been decorated with several reputed awards and funding. Prof. Landau has authored 137 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 20 review articles and 16 book chapters.
