2010-2011 Sackler Lecturer Prof. Thomas Römer, one of the world's leading Biblical scholars, was awarded by Tel Aviv University an Honorary doctorate degree in Philosophy. Prof. Thomas Römer is a professor of Hebrew Bible at the Collège de France and occupies its chair in Milieux Bibliques. He holds a Th.D. in biblical studies from the University of Geneva and an L.Th from the University of Heidelberg.  In 2019, Prof. Römer together with Prof. Israel Finkelstein, his former host, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Archaeology at Tel Aviv University, claimed that the 2,200-year-old ruins discovered in Kiriath-Jearim near Jerusalem could be the places where the Ark of the Covenant stood for many years and could also be is the remains of the biblical town Emmaus.
